Bangalore, the posh tech city of India located in Karnataka, is home to 2 airports. The primary and sole serving airport is Kempegowda International Airport. It is the replacement of HAL Airport, which served the city till 2008. The city currently has 1 airport but also has small airstrips and airfields for other domestic and international purposes. These other airports are not as prominent as the KIAB and are nestled away from the city.
These other airports in Bangalore are Jakkur Aerodrum, HAL Airport, and Yelahanka Air Force Station.
HAL Airport was earlier the sole serving airport that was serving the city in 1970. It is now mainly used as a testing centre by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and the Indian Armed Forces. It is located about 5.3 km away from the Eastern part of the city. There are also plans to reopen it for regular passenger flights after 2033.
- Testing Facility: HAL Airport is currently used only for testing purposes by HAL. It is a government-owned defence company and the Indian Armed Forces.
- Limited Civilian Flights: The airport also handles a few private flights like:
Jakkur Aerodrome (ICAO: VOJK) is a flying school located in Jakkur, a suburb of Bangalore. It is the only airport in Bangalore that is meant only for general aviation (non-commercial flights). The airfield is home to the Government Flying Training School (GFTS). It is the only flying school in the state. The aerodrome covers 214 acres (87 hectares). It has facilities for flight training and space rented out to private companies for building hangars and doing aircraft maintenance. The other common facilities, like a runway and fuel station, are also present here.
Yelahanka Air Force Station is an Indian Air Force base located in Yelahanka. Its main purpose is to train pilots to fly transport aircraft. It also trains navigators to fly the Antonov An-32 planes. The station handles logistics work given by the Air Force Headquarters and Training Command. Every two years, the Aero India air show is held at this airbase. Since 2013, aircraft like the Mi-8, An-32, and Dornier have been based here. Earlier, it also had a squadron of HAL Tejas aircraft, but that was later shifted to Sulur Air Force Station. The base is located about 22 km from Bengaluru City Railway Station.
